ADELAIDE, Australia—On March 18, Independent Legislative Council Member Tammy Franks attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ evening show at the Festival Theatre. This marks her third year seeing the production, and she thought it was just as memorable as ever.

“As always, just utterly beautiful and so talented, so athletic, but making it look so easy even though those elements are so difficult,” she praised.

“I did gymnastics. You wouldn’t guess it now, but I’m in awe and impressed by the absolute athleticism and the top-quality performance that we get every time.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company.
The production is comprised of a series of short pieces that takes its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, Shen Yun tells tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Ms. Franks especially enjoyed the piece “Peacock Paradise,” where celestial maidens danced gracefully amid the clouds.

It really touched me, “the beautiful colors and the synchronicity and the femininity of that,” she shared.

“Always, there’s something—it’s the same but different. So, there’s always something different that you [can] reflect upon in each performance.”

She also thought Shen Yun’s story-dance raising awareness about the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of people of faith was “incredibly powerful.”

“It’s incredibly powerful and [in] a wonderful way,” she said. “I’m a really strong believer in using the arts to influence culture in a positive way. Certainly, when you’re oppressed, art is often the only thing you can use in that way because you don’t have access to power. But art and narrative and story are really, really much more powerful than power.”

Though Shen Yun is well-beloved by audiences around the world, it is currently forbidden by the ruling Chinese regime from performing in China. In fact, prior to the company opening their Australian tour, fake threats were made by Chinese communist agents against the theatre and even the Prime Minister.

Commenting on that, Ms. Franks said, “I am aware of that, and certainly I think that shows why Shen Yun is so important. It is a beautiful, peaceful, artistic event that should be celebrated.”

It was a full house tonight despite the threats because Shen Yun “is so beautiful and so powerful,” she added. “I think people also want to show their support. … It’s the least that we can do, and the people around me in the audience had a wonderful time.”
