ORLANDO, Fla.—Steve Kerestes saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 28, 2026, at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

“It was beautiful. I love the colors, the dancing, the acrobatics, the athleticism of everyone, the choreography,” said Mr. Kerestes, an attorney.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism” and to revive people’s connection to 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I certainly don’t know my Chinese history, but it seems very educational. It’s great to bring back tradition. I think people are hungry for that kind of thing,” Mr. Kerestes said.

He believes that the younger generation, especially, is craving for a return to tradition.

The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“I love the music. I love the mixture. I read in the [program book] that it’s Western and Eastern music, and you can really hear that. It’s very nice to hear the combination of those two things in music, and it really adds a lot,” Mr. Kerestes said.

Shen Yun’s resident composers work closely with its choreographers ahead of each season to bring audiences the best experience from the moment the performance begins.

“It makes me feel great. It’s different music, there’s some that mostly make you feel sad, of course, and so it helps you feel the appropriate reactions to go along with the movements of everyone,” Mr. Kerestes said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“That’s fantastic. I know it must take a lot of work to get to where they are now,” Mr. Kerestes said.

Founded in New York in 2006, Shen Yun was established by elite artists who fled persecution by the Chinese Communist Party. Since then, Shen Yun has grown from one to eight companies that tour the world simultaneously.

“When I saw it coming here to where I live, I was very excited and jumped at the opportunity to come with my family,” Mr. Kerestes shared.

Mr. Kerestes found that Shen Yun exceeded his expectations.

“I was very excited, and I thought it was going to be good, but I think it is better than I even expected.
