ORLANDO, Fla.—Greg and Juanita Lopez saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 27 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando.

“It was amazing,” Ms. Lopez, who works for Disney, said. “It was beautiful, artistic, and creative. It was everything we expected, and more.”

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I didn’t know what to expect tonight. I know my wife wanted to see the show, and I come away impressed … I’m going to tell my daughter tonight. She asked me, ‘Let me know if you like it.’ I want to tell her I loved it and it’s got a great message,” shared Mr. Lopez, a financial advisor.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“I could tell all the hard work they put into it because every routine was on point and synchronized. And so that goes back to the inner strength that they each must have,” Mr. Lopez said.

Shen Yun uses dance to tell stories from China’s 5,000-year-old civilization. Its dance stories also portray the modern true story of Falun Dafa practitioners being persecuted for their faith in China. Falun Dafa is a peaceful self-cultivation practice that teaches the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.

“I think everybody should have the freedom to practice what they believe in. I don’t see anything wrong if you’re practicing peace and spreading love and spreading spirituality,” Mr. Lopez said.

Shen Yun’s use of an animated digital backdrop is patented. The technology’s versatility allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving its storytelling endless possibilities and a hint of magic.

“I thought it was great. I’m into all the electronics and stuff, so I thought it was amazing how they did the transitions,” Mr. Lopez said.

The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“It was fantastic. The music, the orchestra, the sound, everything was so amazing. There’s no other way to explain it. Amazing. It was beautiful,” Ms. Lopez said.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in the bel canto technique, and the digital backdrop provides translations of the Chinese lyrics.

“I thought it was great. One of the best parts of the show. Even if I don’t speak the language, you could feel it through music. I could feel the message he was trying to portray,” Mr. Lopez said.
