TOULOUSE, France—After experiencing Shen Yun for themselves, many audience members express their awe at an artistic experience that was at once aesthetic, cultural, and spiritual.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is dedicated to bringing 5,000 years of Chinese civilization to life. Through classical Chinese dance, a unique orchestra blending Western and traditional instruments, and immersive digital backdrops, the performance transports the audience to a world rich in traditions and universal values.

‘It’s Beautiful—You Have to See It’

Among the spectators in Toulouse, Ella Cartosia, a nurse from Perpignan, couldn’t hide her enthusiasm: “It’s magnificent; I’ve always wanted to see it, and it’s a must-see.”

Her husband, Gabriel Hoyos, a project manager for a European initiative, highlighted the technical and artistic aspects of the performance: “It’s both magnificent and wonderful: the coordination with the dancers, the technical expertise behind it—it’s magnificent.”

Christian Bertrand, a department head at a local government office in Albi, who attended with his family, said: “There is a great deal of poetry in the performances, a brisk pace, and flawlessly executed choreography with the dancers moving in perfect unison.”

A Colorful and Immersive Aesthetic

Shen Yun’s visual world, inspired by China’s various dynasties and ethnic groups, leaves a lasting impression.

“I love the fabrics and the Chinese silks—they’re absolutely lovely,” Ms. Cartosia said, referring to Shen Yun’s handcrafted costumes.

For Mr. Hoyos, the aesthetics reflect an inner harmony: “There is a sense of purity in both the dance and the costumes, which are both incredibly beautiful and harmonious.”

Mr. Bertrand, for his part, describes it as a true sensory journey: “The aesthetic is very colorful and luminous; it invites us to travel, to dream, and to find serenity.”

An Authentic Musical Experience

Shen Yun’s signature live orchestra plays a major role in creating the immersive experience, with its unique blend of traditional Chinese instruments and a Western symphony orchestra.

“It’s a wonderful experience to listen to Chinese music,” Ms. Cartosia said.

Her husband emphasizes the sound quality: “The sound is different when it’s live—it’s richer, more authentic; it really adds something special.”

Mr. Bertrand agreed: “I really liked the orchestra, too! I enjoyed the musicians just as much as the dancers.”

Universal Values that Resonate

Beyond the artistic performance, Shen Yun highlights values rooted in 5,000 years of authentic traditional Chinese culture, such as compassion, faith, and the pursuit of truth.

Ms. Cartosia said she followed each of Shen Yun’s pieces with great interest: “I’m discovering Chinese culture and learning a lot! I’m thrilled to be here today.”

Mr. Hoyos highlights the show’s human dimension: “The show conveys human values such as kindness; you don’t come away from an experience like this unscathed!”

Mr. Bertrand found in Shen Yun universal values: “I felt a great deal of kindness and compassion, just as in the Christian faith; these are universal values found in all beliefs.”

A Spiritual and Inspiring Dimension

The theme of divine inspiration, which permeates Shen Yun’s performances, also resonates deeply with the audience.

Indeed, Shen Yun means “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” paying homage to the ancient Chinese belief in a culture inherited from the divine. China was thus known as the “Land of the Divine,” and all Chinese people—from the humblest peasant to the most prestigious emperor—praised the deities for their guidance in cultivating harmony among Heaven, Earth, and humankind.

“This leads us to reflect more deeply on our own reality,” Ms. Cartosia said. Her husband added, “There is something beyond that provides answers and fuels reflection.”

Mr. Bertrand took away a powerful message from Shen Yun: “To be strong on the outside, you must first be at peace with yourself; it’s a thought that resonates deeply, including in professional life.”

A Show that Comes Highly Recommended

Every audience member interviewed strongly recommends the experience.

“It’s a show for everyone, regardless of age—you have to come see it,” Ms. Cartosia said.

Mr. Hoyos emphasized the overall quality: “The quality is exceptional, the timing is perfect—they’re true professionals: it’s a complete escape.”

Mr. Bertrand summed it up simply: “I recommend it without hesitation: bring the whole family, come as you are, and let yourself be swept away.”
