Walking barefoot offers benefits from head to toe. It improves foot function as well as giving a boost to your brain.

“Your feet are your main interface with the ground and the major source of information for your nervous system,” Mark Morningstar, a chiropractor, told The Epoch Times.

Stronger Feet

The clearest benefits of walking barefoot show up in the feet and the way we move. People who grow up frequently barefoot tend to have differences in foot structure and movement patterns, and children develop better jumping and balance skills.
The same pattern shows up in athletes. Gymnasts who train barefoot, for example, have been shown to have better neuromuscular control, greater stability, and stronger foot muscles.

“Walking barefoot allows the foot’s small intrinsic muscles to work at their best,” Morningstar said. Intrinsic muscles, which reside within the foot, are vital for balance and fine movements.

Modern shoes may reduce the need for intrinsic muscles to work as actively. They tend to reduce how hard the small muscles in the feet need to work to support the arch. Over time, this reduces the muscles’ development and contributes to weakness from lack of use.

Because the feet form the foundation of the body’s movement, weak feet can also affect spinal health. “It can be a valuable tool for promoting healthier movement and improved posture,” Morningstar said.

A Calmer, Sharper Brain

The benefits of being barefoot don’t stop at the feet. Barefoot walking also supports the brain and nervous system.

A study compared the effects of walking barefoot and walking in sneakers on cognitive function in teenagers. Both groups completed a 40-minute walking session four times a week for 12 weeks. Researchers tracked brain activity using EEG scans before and after the program.

By the end, the barefoot group showed a significant decrease in brain waves associated with stress and overactivity, and an increase in brain waves associated with a calmer, relaxed yet still alert state of mind. They also showed clear improvements in cognitive speed and concentration, and a drop in overall brain stress.

“The feet are one component of an integrated neurological system,” Morningstar said.

One explanation may be that bare feet pick up far more sensory information than feet in shoes. The many nerve receptors in the feet send constant feedback to the brain, and moving the toes also increases blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain.

That sensory input also affects the autonomic nervous system, the part of the nervous system that runs largely on autopilot, controlling functions including heart rate and stress response. Direct contact between bare feet and natural surfaces has been shown to promote relaxation and support the body’s recovery from stress.

“It’s about offering the nervous system one more opportunity to experience safety, presence, and connection,” Sandra Nathan, an integrative counselor and nervous system regulation specialist, told The Epoch Times.

Rather than being caught in anxious thoughts about the past or worrying about the future, your attention naturally returns to the present moment—the earth under your feet. “That shift is important because the nervous system responds not only to our thoughts, but also to what our body is experiencing,” Nathan said.

Walking barefoot may also help reduce inflammation, possibly through two mechanisms: reflexology, in which pressure on the soles of the feet stimulates nerve endings, and earthing, which occurs when the soles of the feet make direct contact with the ground. It has also been shown to increase serotonin levels.

Does the Surface Matter?

The surface beneath your feet changes how your body responds.

Grass offers gentle stimulation. Nerve endings in the skin detect light touch. As you walk across grass, these receptors send a constant stream of information to the brain, helping the muscles in the feet make small adjustments that improve posture and balance. This may explain why walking barefoot on grass has been shown to improve balance.

Sand helps strengthen the lower limbs. As the heel sinks with each step, the muscles in the feet and legs have to work harder to push the body forward.

Trails covered in soil, bark, or small stones add a different kind of challenge. The uneven surface creates an acupressure-like effect that enhances the flow of sensory information from the feet to the central nervous system, helping improve balance and postural control.

Getting Started

Nathan’s advice is always to start small. “You don’t need to spend hours walking barefoot to experience potential benefits. Even five or ten minutes on a safe, clean surface such as grass or sand can become a lovely opportunity to slow down and reconnect with yourself,” she said.

Rather than worrying about doing it “correctly,” she encourages curiosity: notice the sensation underfoot, notice your breathing, notice whether your shoulders soften or your thoughts slow down.

While barefoot walking may offer many benefits, it is not suitable for everyone, Morningstar said. “Someone who has spent years walking around in very stiff and very cushioned shoes will not be able to suddenly start off walking long distances in bare feet,” he said. The feet need time to become stronger gradually.

People with certain conditions, including diabetic neuropathy, serious foot deformities, severe arthritis, osteoporosis with a high risk of fractures, and some balance disorders, are generally safer walking in supportive footwear, he said.

One of the biggest misconceptions about nervous system regulation is that people expect one thing to transform their lives overnight, Nathan said. In reality, healing is usually much gentler than that. “Our nervous system learns through experience. Every time we experience moments of safety, connection, calm, or joy, we are teaching it something new,” she said.

For some, that experience is barefoot walking; for others, it might be gardening, sitting in nature, mindful breathing, or spending time with people who help them feel safe, she said.

“Healing happens through small experiences of safety repeated over time.”
