With Hong Kong-born pop singer Coco Lee’s death by depression-spurred suicide in July, mental health has again come into the spotlight. Can depression be overcome? Mr. Zhu Enli, director of Taiwan Chen En Chinese Medicine Clinic, explained how to reduce the risks of developing depression on the Epoch Times “Health 1+1” program. He also shared how he helped patients recover from depression in three months.

Depression is considered to be a disease related to brain structure anomalies. It is manifested by significant changes in the hippocampus, which controls memory; the amygdala, which controls emotions; and the anterior cingulate cortex, which regulates emotions. With such structure alterations, the patient might be led to revisit negative memories related to emotions and become trapped in them and unable to escape. These negative memories may even lead to impulsive actions or suicidal inclinations and behavior.
