“The costumes are amazing, the dances are phenomenal, the music is wonderful,” he added, again noting that ineffable quality Shen Yun evokes. “But it is difficult for someone to put it into words because it is a show, so you need to see it.”
Mr. Bundy took special note of Shen Yun’s diverse array of artistic endeavor, that is, its emphasis on three important markers of performance: song, dance, and storytelling. “To my eyes, it is a combination of the three,” he said.
“Through the universal language of music and dance,” reads the company’s website, “Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture.”
“Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired,” states the website.
Outside of the performance’s artistic exterior, Mr. Bundy noted the inner meanings that permeate through its expressions of understanding and tolerance. “I think we need to understand other cultures if we humans are going to get passed this nation-state mentality,” he said.
“Understanding old cultures, and old civilizations, and long history is important—particularly for folks in this country—because the United States tends to be a little bit isolated in its mentality,” said Mr. Bundy.
Mr. Bundy said he will encourage people to see the performance because “this is exciting and it is remarkable.”
