VANCOUVER, Canada—Company manager Rachel Dixon and her daughter, Sophie, were mesmerized by Shen Yun Performing Arts when they attended the company’s matinee at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on April 12.
The mother-daughter duo loved the performers’ vibrant display of colors and traditional culture.

“It’s beautiful. I love all the dancing. It’s very precise. It’s very colorful. It’s definitely held our interest,” Mrs. Dixon said.

“I thought the [3D digital backdrop] was fantastic. I was not expecting that. That was quite an interesting addition.”

Shen Yun’s innovative digital technology creates seamless interaction between the backdrop projection and the performers on stage. By extending the stage to infinite realms, this patented 3D invention brings storytelling without limits to the audience.

Sophie, too, enjoyed the performance. She particularly loved the piece where the dancers’ long sleeves billowed and flowed like the gentle movement of water on stage.

According to the company’s website, these sleeves were a part of ancient Chinese feminine attire representing humility and grace.

“I think the outfits are really cool, the designs are really nice, and the music goes really well with their dancing,” she said happily. “It’s really awesome.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to restore China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, which was all but destroyed by the Chinese Communist Party.
Its production is composed of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, Shen Yun tells tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Reflecting on the company’s many story-based dances, Mrs. Dixon was very moved by the piece that raised awareness for the ongoing human rights issues in present-day China under communist rule.

She loved that the artists are using dance and music to speak out about societal issues.

“I think it’s a great way to [raise awareness] because maybe not a lot of people would know about it if [they] were just going in for the art,” she shared. “I think that’s a great bridge.”
