NEW YORK—The Colombian singer of salsa, boleros and flamenco, living in New York City, Maria del Rosario Prada Larrota, was impressed by the music and performances of the sopranos in Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center Saturday evening Jan. 18. 

Ms. Prada Larrota congratulated the performers. It’s “beautiful, it’s the best, congratulations! It’s the best!” she said.

The New York-based Shen Yun features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers and bel canto soloists, a unique animated backdrop, and an East-West orchestra. 

She said both sopranos, Tianling Song and Haolan Geng, were singing songs about the “meaning of life.” She said they were “spectacular, the maximum ... all sopranos were very impressive.” 

Commenting on the second soprano, Ms. Prada Larrota said, “She filled the whole theater with the volume of her voice.”

Ms. Prada Larrota has lived in the United States since 1998. After the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, she volunteered to help clean up Ground Zero. The Columbian Consulate acknowledged her for a song she wrote dedicated the 9/11 victims, titled “The Shadow of the Towers.” 

On Sunday evening, another singer, Marcelos Santos, of the Brazilian band Gurizada Fandangueira, also commented that the sopranos were really good. 

“It exceeded my expectations,” he said. “Unbelievable.” 

He also commented on how Geng’s voice could reach both high notes and low notes, giving her voice great range. 

About its soloists, the Shen Yun website says: “Their impassioned songs give voice to hopes that have shaped Chinese culture for centuries.”
