SALT LAKE CITY—Audrey Anderson and Kurt Krauss saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on March 17 at George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater.

“I thought it was magnificent on every level. The costuming, the singing, the orchestra, the soloists,” said Mr. Krauss, a pianist.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

Mr. Krauss shared that he enjoyed seeing Chinese history, what China is like now, and how people are overcoming their challenges.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“The women seemed like they floated on stage, and the men seemed to have jumped really high and did all kinds of spins,” Mr. Krauss said.

Shen Yun’s website states that classical Chinese dance training includes three main components—technical skill, form, and bearing, which is one of the many ways that classical Chinese dance is different from ballet.

“It’s just absolutely beautiful to watch, mystifying, and it took me away. [Made me] forget my outside problems and challenges [so I could] just enjoy a good show,” Mr. Krauss said.

Many of Shen Yun’s dance stories share values that were established through centuries of history and culture.

“It was beautiful. And it’s strange. It goes exactly in line with what we believe in ... . That if you are a good person, helping your neighbors, being there for your friends, taking care of those in need, that those things lead us to be closer to the Creator,” Ms. Anderson said.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in bel canto technique, and the digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung.

“Absolutely splendid. Absolutely beautiful. I felt like her control was perfect. Her tones were perfect. She was just right there every single note. And it had an emotional response from me, and that’s what you want when you’re singing to people,” said Ms. Anderson, a choir director.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“What was really interesting is the animated backdrop that Shen Yun has patented. That was a remarkable thing I’ve never seen before. And it was a great experience to come here and sit on the orchestra level and experience all of this. It was a wonderful show,” Mr. Krauss said.
