BALTIMORE—The Dieners planned a family outing to see Shen Yun Performing Arts as a way to share a different culture with their three young daughters, and found the performance to be far beyond what they could have hoped for.

“It was phenomenal,” said Chris Diener, a home builder, at The Hippodrome Theatre the evening of Feb. 10. The girls were smiling throughout the show and singing the melodies they heard afterward, “having a great time.”

“It was beautiful, absolutely beautiful,” he said.

Tatiana Diener, a vice president of human resources, said she has been coming to the Hippodrome for two decades and has been trying to see Shen Yun for years. This time, her parents had come overseas for a visit, and the whole family outing to see Shen Yun for the first time became a very special experience.

“It is truly divine, and it is beautiful,” she said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and has a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture through the arts. It is unique in more than one way—making use of Chinese melodies and instruments in an otherwise classical orchestra, and patented backdrop technology that seamlessly blends stage and screen. Through artistic innovations, Shen Yun seeks to revive age-old universal values and traditional culture.

“It does speak to the heart. The music it just gives you such a different level of experience, everything about the music,” Mrs. Diener said. “It  really kind of transfers you, it moves you, it makes you feel like you’re there.”

“It’s just huge to feel that experience,” she said. “I think the performance is just another level.”

Mr. Diener added that the revival aspect of Shen Yun was something Americans could relate to. Traditional culture is also at stake in the States, he explained, and Shen Yun presented an inspiring vision for the future.

“It was beautiful to hear about the history of China and how they’re trying to keep it alive and how they’re trying to celebrate it and bring it to the rest of the world so it doesn’t get forgotten or get defeated. It’s amazing,” he said.

“That no matter what is going on, there’s a way to do the right thing and help people and be good, and no matter what negative situation is going on in your life or going on with any government, you can make a difference. It’s just one person at a time.”
