MISSISSAUGA, Canada—Stephanie Mary Lippa, an elderly home caretaker, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on March 14 at the Living Arts Centre.
“I love the show! It’s amazing! The dancing is so world-class. The backgrounds are just spectacular. The orchestra is epic, world-class. The music hits you right in the heart,” Ms. Lippa said.
Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism” and to revive people’s connection to 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I am so happy for everybody that put this show together, that they can bring this to the Western world. We really need this,” Ms. Lippa said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“So you have musicians, the orchestra, you have the dancers, which are world-class, because I have been to different shows in my life. I have never seen this type of dancing; this is incredible. It’s like they said it’s a mixture of the culture of China, but also it can compete with the whole world,” Ms. Lippa said.

Shen Yun’s website states that Classical Chinese dance training includes three main components—technical skill, form, and bearing, which is one of the many ways that classical Chinese dance is different from ballet.

“When I saw the dancers, one particular female dancer—she was divine—she could be from another world—angelic. She’s talented at this aerial move—your whole body is suspended in the air. When she did that move, you didn’t hear anything [when she landed]. How is that possible?” Ms. Lippa wondered.

One dance that left the deepest impression on Ms. Lippa told the true story of Falun Dafa practitioners following the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Despite their goodness, they are being persecuted for their faith in present-day China.

“The tears started flowing when they did the scene about the persecution of the members of the Falun Gong.”

Ms. Lippa has known of Shen Yun, but this year was her first time seeing it.

“This is my first time ever, and I will definitely attend every single year from now,” she shared.

“[Shen Yun] wasn’t just a performance and a show that you pay for. It was an interactive, divinely guided, inspired, celestial experience. Only the human being that comes here can know what this will heal within them,” she said.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in bel canto technique, and the digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung.

“The soprano singer was a WOW,” Ms. Lippa said.

The song text speaks about the importance of being a good person and believing in the divine. Ms. Lippa believes that even someone who doesn’t believe in God can still appreciate Shen Yun.

“An atheist can still appreciate the level of talent and how much hard work it takes as a dancer—that’s world-class,” she said.

“Whether you believe something or you don’t, you should never close your heart to Shen Yun. You can literally see with your eyes the costumes, the colors, the dancing, the ability, the singing, the music, talent—there’s so much,” she added.
