Spike proteins are the spike-shaped protrusions found on the surface of certain viruses. They allow the virus to penetrate host cells and cause infection. One prime example is the SARS-CoV-2 virus which caused the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the existence of spike protein on the surface of SARS-CoV-2, it is able to interact with the human cells and cause infection. As a result, the spike protein became the object of vaccine and antiviral research.
