NEW YORK—There are many reasons to decide to go see a performance. For Tanya Rivero it was her son’s love for Chinese culture that brought them to see Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center on Jan. 17.
“He’s the one that told me we should go to the show,” Ms. Rivero said about her son Silas. “He loves Chinese culture,” she said, adding that Silas takes Mandarin in school and that they read Chinese children’s stories together.
“I have ... to thank [him] for introducing me to this beautiful culture,” she said.
Ms. Rivero is the Wall Street Journal’s anchor for “Lunch Break,” and previously worked for ABC as an anchor and reporter, as well as for WCBS-TV in New York City.
Before pursuing her career as a journalist, she was an actress and danced with the New York City Ballet from 1989 to 1991.
“It’s great, it’s fantastic. Beautiful dancing,” Ms. Rivero said after watching the performance.
Shen Yun brings audiences a brilliant display of traditional Chinese culture using the ancient art form of classical Chinese dance. The company was founded in New York in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
Shen Yun has received acclaim around the world for its performances which feature some of the world’s best classical Chinese dancers.
“They are exquisitely trained,” Ms. Rivero said. “It’s a beautiful art-form.”
Over the past 10 years, Shen Yun has brought an appreciation for classical Chinese culture to millions around the world.
Part of Shen Yun’s performances are the ancient Chinese stories it brings to life on stage, such as that of the Monkey King from the famed classical Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” a character who young Silas was already familiar with.
“It was great ... He’s funny,” Silas said about the piece with the Monkey King, who he has already been reading about with his mother.
“The dramas are great,” Ms. Rivero said, adding that she appreciated the cultural elements of the performance.
