‘Thought-Provoking and Well Worth Seeing’: Australian Federal MP Paul Fletcher on Shen Yun

SYDNEY, Australia—The Hon Paul Fletcher MP said he was “thoroughly enjoying” his experience of Shen Yun Performing Arts at its premier at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre this year.

Shen Yun is “very entertaining, very informative, quite thought-provoking, and well worth seeing,” he said on April 27.

Mr. Fletcher is Australia’s Shadow Minister for Science and the Arts, and Shadow Minister for Government Services in the Digital Economy. He is also the Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives. He has been in Parliament since 2009, serving as the Member for Bradfield.
Founded in New York in 2006, Shen Yun is on a mission to revive the rich cultural heritage of China through breathtaking music and dance, complemented by stunning digital animated backdrops and exquisite costumes. Chinese culture is divinely-inspired, dating back more than 5,000 years.

“I think what is very striking is ... the sheer physicality of the performance, the extraordinary flips and turns and the remarkable talent of the dancers,” Mr. Fletcher said, adding he was impressed by “the way that stories are communicated very, very effectively.”

Classical Chinese dance is the hallmark of Shen Yun. It is one of the world’s most comprehensive dance systems, with its own systematic training in fundamentals, distinct postures, and ways of bringing out the innermost feelings, as well as a multitude of flips, spins, and other aerial and tumbling techniques.

The dance form can vividly depict characters and scenes from any time period, as well as a wide range of emotions, and portray any cherished timeless virtues—righteousness, loyalty, benevolence, and tolerance.

Mr. Fletcher was also impressed with Shen Yun’s animated digital backdrop.
“The merging of very sophisticated modern multimedia technology with the huge high-resolution screen, together with the performers on stage, and the way that the characters move between the physical stage in front of us and then the screen and the animation, is extremely effective and very cleverly done,” he said.
Grounded in state-of-the-art graphics technology, Shen Yun’s backdrop provides striking scenery, extending the stage, and at times interacting with the dancers on the stage while bringing the audience into the story.
“It is bringing two different styles of storytelling [together]: an extremely modern style, a very technologically sophisticated style, and then, of course, a style of storytelling which goes back thousands of years,“ he said, referring to the digital backdrop and classical Chinese dance. He called the synergy a ”compelling package.”
Mr. Fletcher said he gained “an insight into timeless Chinese traditions [and] an insight into some of the underlying spiritual insights and perspectives,” adding that the myths and legends, and ancient stories depicted in Shen Yun are “very, very educational.”
“I think what is interesting is the sense of the supernatural, the sense of another world, and, of course, that is present in all great religious traditions that the idea that we are here in this physical world but there is another world beyond that,” he observed. “I think that sense comes through very clearly in the production tonight.”
“What we are seeing clearly in this production is an insight into the richness of Chinese culture and the thousands of years of history and tradition,“ he said. ”And it does seem rather unfortunate that that’s something that cannot be seen by people in China today. But let’s hope that won’t always be the case.”

This year, Shen Yun tours almost 200 cities around the world, but still cannot be seen in China, and there is no other performance like it in China today.

This is because Shen Yun seeks to present “China before communism,” which runs contrary to the Chinese Communist Party’s systematic attempts since its inception to extinguish true Chinese culture. The CCP, which is atheist, sees China’s divinely-inspired cultural heritage as an ideological threat.

“Chinese culture obviously goes back to thousands of years and China is one of the world’s great nations and has been for a very long time. And I think it’s important that as many people as possible, whichever country they’re in, have an understanding of Chinese cultural traditions,” Mr. Fletcher said.

“I think this is a very important educational tool as well as, of course, being richly entertaining. And so I think [Shen Yun] will be enjoyed and appreciated all around the world.”

Shen Yun previously performed in Adelaide on April 6–9. Shen Yun is performing in Sydney on April 27–May 7, and in Canberra on May 2.
