HOUSTON—Texas State Representative Allen Fletcher and his wife Penny Fletcher, owner of security company Resource Protection Management, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston, Dec. 31.

Mr. Fletcher, who has a personal and professional interest in China as a politician, was inspired to see New York-based Shen Yun’s revival of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the universal languages of music and dance.

“We thought it was amazing,” Mr. Fletcher said.

“Excellent, beautiful,” Mrs. Fletcher said. “It’s just magnificent to watch them all.”

Mr. Fletcher said watching Shen Yun left him a positive feeling about the future of China’s culture, as the performers of Shen Yun came together from around the world to bring the divinely inspired culture to the world.

“I think it’s a wonderful message,” Mr. Fletcher said.

Traditional Chinese culture is said to be inspired by the heavens, and the connection between the art and the divine in the culture had resonated with Mr. Fletcher. Being a Christian, Mr. Fletcher said he was moved when the image of Buddha appeared, as it was symbolism that people around the world were the same.

“I was very impressed with [the scenes of] heaven, and the whole aspect. It’s the same all over the world,” Mr. Fletcher said. “It was a wonderful experience.”

The passion of the performers carried through for Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher, who said they had been discussing the level of detail each dancer presented in the performance.

Mr. Fletcher said he saw in the classical Chinese dance unique hand movements, down to the fingers, as the female dancers performed, and “they never broke character.”

Classical Chinese dance is an independent and vast system dance with hundreds of unique postures and movements. The system also emphasizes bearing, or “inner spirit,” allowing the form to be richly expressive, according to Shen Yun’s website.

“We love it,” Mrs. Fletcher said. “I think it’s just wonderful.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has four touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit Shen Yun Performing Arts.
