KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra has arrived in Taiwan’s southernmost port city, and the locals in the audience on Oct. 1 were delighted by the music they experienced.
Wu Shu-ru, president of the Kaohsiung Philharmonic Association, who was among those in attendance at Kaohsiung Normal University Performance Hall, said it was a precious opportunity to be able to see the orchestra.
“I am very thankful for the musical feast,” said Ms. Wu, who was certain that the magnificent performance had “warmed many people’s hearts.”
With a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture, the symphony orchestra brings to the audience all-original Chinese compositions drawn from 5,000 years of culture and legends, as well as familiar Western classics.
One piece that stood out for Ms. Wu was “The Mystical Udumbara,” which depicts the tiny, white flowers that, based on Buddhist scriptures, only blossom once every 3,000 years.
“I truly enjoyed the moment of quietness from the piece ”The Mystical Udumbara,“ said Ms. Wu, adding ”the melody was just so graceful and beautiful.”
Also much to her delight was the final piece of the performance “Divine Compassion,” which a touched Ms. Wu said was simply “exceptionally exquisite.” The final piece features the universal theme of goodness overcoming evil, and how the power of goodness can transform the world.
The many different instruments making up the orchestra left Ms. Wu full of praise.
“All of the musical instruments, the Eastern instruments and Western instruments, blended so wonderfully together that I believe everyone in the audience would surely find it pleasing,” she said.
Such a combination, according to the Shen Yun’s website, brings to life the beauty Chinese melodies and the grandeur of a Western symphony, and is considered a breakthrough in classical music.
“I am sure the orchestra’s global tour has people finding joy while feeling warmth in their hearts.”
Citing an old Chinese saying, “It is more joyful to share the joy than to keep it to oneself,” Ms. Wu suggested that more people ought to come to the performance and enjoy the wonderful music.
