NEW YORK—Shen Yun Performing Arts performed at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City on April 7 to an enthralled audience. Nicole Fiene, a senior district manager for ADP, came with her friend Michelle Estevez, a teacher.

Ms. Estevez gave her impressions on her first time seeing Shen Yun, and said: “It was very beautiful. I like how mesmerizing it was. The visuals were very beautiful. [With] the screen in the back, it almost made it feel like it was a movie with live action. [With] the orchestra and the music, everything connected very nicely.”

Ms. Fiene has seen Shen Yun seven or eight times, she said. “I like to share it with all my friends because it’s so special. When I’m inside looking at it, I just feel this refreshment, like a wave of inspiration.”

She commented on the beauty and softness of the female performers. “The female dancers are such an inspiration,” she said. “It makes me want to incorporate that in my own life because sometimes, we could all be a little harsh. We let the emotions get to us, but seeing how beautiful delicateness is—it inspires me to be this way or start trying to be that way.”

Ms. Estevez admired how Shen Yun performers tell stories through dance. “I feel like you really have to focus because there are no words in the show. It’s just the movement, the dancing. You really have to see the connection between the music, the dancers, and the screen—just everything, and really kind of just hone in, and focus, and concentrate.”

Through classical Chinese dance and music, Shen Yun is sharing with the world the beauty of China’s authentic 5,000 years of history. Since its founding in 2006, the company has received worldwide accolades for its mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.

Ms. Fiene agreed. “That’s a really good point. I agree with that because there are no words. You have to be able to see the bigger picture,” she said.

She was most impressed with the elegance and charming quality of the dancers. “Just the [dancers] gracefulness and the delicateness. I really want to incorporate that in my life.”

Ms. Fiene expressed her sense of renewal and continual improvement that she experienced during the performance. “I just feel like a renewed because I always, always want to work on myself, I always want to improve myself. Every time I see Shen Yun, which always brings me back, it’s a renewed-like inspiration to keep on that path of improving myself.”

There was a spiritual message that Ms. Fiene appreciated in the show. “I think for me, I’ve always known that there’s a bigger picture to life. It’s not just the daily things that we do. It’s part of life. But there’s a bigger picture that I think, when people are able to connect with that bigger picture, life becomes so much more fulfilling and so much more meaningful. The bigger picture.”

If she was asked to summarize Shen Yun to her friends, Ms. Fiene said: “I’m going to say that it’s like beauty. Like beauty that you’ve never seen before: The type of beauty that the world needs right now.”

Brooklyn Native Approves of Shen Yun’s Message for the World

As the first time Jim Harris had seen Shen Yun perform, he and his friend Rhonda enjoyed the show very much.

Mr. Harris said what he liked about the performance, especially Shen Yun’s message for China.: “I like two things about [Shen Yun]: One, that it brought different parts of China together; and the other one, that it brought in Falun Dafa.”

He said Falun Dafa, a spiritual practice from China, “will save China. I say China because it’s the only positive, overreaching force in China today. Negative never should win.”

He expressed his understanding of Shen Yun’s message to the world. “The spiritual message is the same throughout history. You have to choose what side of the fence you’re on: the bad side, on the fence, or the good side.

“Most people want to choose the good side,” he said, “but they’re really on the fence. It’s like on Monday morning you decide to go on a diet, but you do that every Monday morning. Was it really a decision? You have to choose to be on the right side of the fence.”

Mr. Harris appreciated the production values as well as the message conveyed in the performance. “I like the show: The costumes, the precision, the dreaminess. [Also], classical education should not disappear,” he said.
He said he liked the stories and the music. “I think they’re all good stories, professionally done, very good, well disciplined. Just really good. I like music. The music was good, very well done. Again, professional. This is New York City: Everything here is professional. We’re the capital of the world!”
Mr. Harris had this to say about Shen Yun performing in New York City: “Come see it! It’s worthwhile.”
With shows scheduled in over 200 cities and across five continents, the 2024 touring season is shaping up to be the artists’ busiest yet.
