DENVER, Colo.—Attorney Shelley Thompson had no idea what was in store when she walked into Shen Yun’s matinee on March 31. Exiting the Buell Theater at the conclusion of the show, Ms. Thompson was thoroughly impressed.

“It was a wonderful performance. I thought it was great,” she exclaimed.

“The dancing was phenomenal. The performers were phenomenal. The orchestra was phenomenal. The production, costumes, the technology of the screen combined with the [live performance] was really neat.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Its artists are seeking to revive the glory of China’s 5,000 years of history and share with everyone all that was good and beautiful in China before communism.

The program includes classical Chinese, ethnic, folk, and short storyline dances as well as solo musical performances. Together with the live orchestra, the artists recount tales and legends ranging from ancient times to the modern day.

Ms. Thompson thought Shen Yun’s mission to revive traditional culture was very beautiful and its presentation was right on target.

“I learned a lot today about traditional Chinese dance in the sense that it inspired European dance, inspired acrobatics, and inspired a lot of later arts that I didn’t realize,” she expressed.

“I was interested in that history. I really liked the ancient stories—all of it. I loved it.”

For its 2024 touring season, Shen Yun’s eight equally-sized companies will be performing in over 200 cities across five continents.

For Ms. Thompson, the message she will be taking home from Shen Yun is that we should “be kind and forgiving to others. To always do the right thing and live a good life.”
she loved the values Shen Yun conveyed and the spiritual element of the show.

“I have faith. I think we all have our different faiths, but they’re similar in the sense that many of us believe in something greater,” she said.

“[Traditional values] are important. I think people need to be less divisive, come together as humans, and be kind to each other. It’s a basic value that sometimes gets lost. It’s great [that Shen Yun] is bringing that message from Chinese culture around the world.”
