NISHINOMIYA, Japan—Shen Yun Performing Arts finished all five performances at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Nishinomiya, Japan, and on the final evening of Jan. 9, there were two curtain calls but audiences still continued applauding.

Audience members said that they wished Shen Yun would come back to Nishinomiya every year, and already looked forward to seeing Shen Yun again.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company and has in recent years set a new bar for the art form internationally.

Amazed by the Dancers

“The male dancers are masculine, valiant, and majestic. They performed many difficult spinning, flipping, and jumping. Their dances are very expressive with even their fingertips presenting the details,” said Mr. Harano Akira, “The female dancers present elegance by using their bodies, limbs, and hands, and even the subtleties of their costumes. I kept on wondering how they can be so soft, graceful, and noble.”

Mr. Harano is the president of an acupuncture and moxibustion clinic. He was amazed by the dancers’ synchronization and accuracy.

“They jumped high but landed on the stage quietly. Their dancers are like playing a pre-recorded movie, which is really incredible,” he said. “I was shocked when I saw they danced with very difficult techniques but presented them with ease.”

Mr. Harano said all Shen Yun dancers are talented but humble.

“There’s no primary dancer in the dance. But you also can say every artist is the main actor, the main actress. They cooperate with each other harmoniously and dance one story after another vividly,” he said. “I guess the director must be a very powerful and admirable expert.”

Dancer Ms. Asaki Yumemi wanted to dance for Shen Yun after attending the performance.

“It’s marvelous! The dancers’ dynamics and facial expressions are very impressive,” she said. “I was touched. It’s really beautiful. I want to try this dance, if only once.”

Each Shen Yun performance consists of nearly 20 vignettes, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through highly-expressive art forms such as classical Chinese dance, original orchestral music performed live, soloists who sing in the bel canto tradition, animated digital backdrops, and more.

Presenting ‘Real Happiness’

Mr. Uchiyama Yoshito, the owner of a design company, said he thought a lot when attending Shen Yun, and very much enjoyed “the fantastic show.”

“We are very lucky to watch these divine cultures that are inherited generation by generation. I believe Shen Yun wants us to know that real happiness is in these traditional cultures,” he said. “China has a long history that enriched the Chinese culture. But look at current China. I feel sad.”

“It’s very precious that Shen Yun Performing Arts sends the message to China to restore the traditional Chinese culture, from all around the world,” said dentist Mr. Sawada Munehisa. “[Shen Yun] artists are very brave. I admire them. I have become their fan.”
The name Shen Yun translates into “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Mr. Sawada said that he, like Shen Yun, believes that people should always believe in divine beings.

“I felt it from deep in my soul. So, I applauded harder and harder during the show,” he said.

Japanese Audiences Wish to Attend Again

“I was cleansed by Shen Yun. I felt I obtained energy. I hope Shen Yun can come back every year,” said music Teacher Tamiya Haru. “I’m waiting to attend Shen Yun again.”

Ms. Morioka Yoriko, a co-owner of a tailor store, said Shen Yun was invigorating and uplifting.

“If you get a chance to attend Shen Yun once, you will know. It’s magnificent!” she said. “I hope Shen Yun will come here every year and then I can attend every year.”

Mr. Nakamura Akio, an executive of a beauty products company, said it wasn’t only Shen Yun’s production that was beautiful, but the show also has strong inner beauty and power.

“Shen Yun brings us what is true and good,” he said. “Shen Yun’s artists are not pursuing material profits. They are pursuing real kindness.”
