SAN ANTONIO—Since its inception in 2006, New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has made a name for itself as the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Audience members frequently describe it as an experience unlike any other, and media relations expert Leslie Ojeda and her mother had been curious about Shen Yun for years.

On Feb. 2, Ms. Ojeda and her mother attended a performance at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and felt Shen Yun truly did live up to the hype. The artists received a standing ovation and two curtain calls, and Ms. Ojeda was inspired to learn more.

“It was wonderful, truly beautiful,” said Ms. Ojeda, who is head of a public relations firm. “I think it is very pure, beautiful. I want to learn more about Chinese culture. “
Ms. Ojeda said there was much she had not known about the five millennia of Chinese civilization and culture, including the fact that the Chinese held it to be divinely inspired, a gift from the heavens.

“I think it shows that although our worlds are very far apart, we are one people. We’re all the same,” she said.

What Shen Yun expressed was something universal.

“We’re all similar in that we’re all humans and that we appreciate music, and the ability to move, and to share our personal stories, and that’s what Shen Yun was about, is sharing personal stories and culture,” she said.

During the performance, emcees explained that the name “Shen Yun” means “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” a reference to the divinely inspired traditional Chinese culture that the artists bring to life through music and dance.

Ms. Ojeda said the dancers live up to the name.

“I thought that the dancers were beautiful, agile, graceful, just a spectacle to watch and see and enjoy,” she said. “[The dancers] are a wonder to watch.”
