NEWARK, N.J.—As a New Yorker, attorney Peter Bee had seen New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts many times during weeks-long performances at Lincoln Center, but this year, he wanted to treat his granddaughter to the performance and attended the show with her at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on May 3.

“The dancers are amazing, just so amazing,” said Mr. Bee. “It’s an incredible performance. ... The music is wonderful. The orchestra is doing a great job—and I don’t know what you can say about a magnificent performance. It’s just so good.”

Founded in 2006 to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and has a mission to showcase China before communism.

Mr. Bee thought the values and virtues shown in Shen Yun were a reminder that “people are the same all over the world.”

“There are some differences, but at the heart of things, people are the same. Children are the same, lovers are the same, singers are the same. I like that,” he said.

Enjoying Shen Yun for the first time that evening was Robert Cigol, an engineer, who said the beautiful performance was also a learning experience.
“I was very impressed by it,” Mr. Cigol said during intermission. He said the art forms were as new to him as the culture, and enjoyed the classical Chinese dance, the East-West orchestra’s performance of original works based on ancient melodies, and the new stories.

“I think they’re doing a phenomenal job. I think they did a beautiful show so far. I really like it,” he said.
