MONTERREY, Mexico—Cristóbal Lans Lobeira saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 26 at the Escenario GNP Seguros.
It is something super beautiful. The colors, the music, it is something spectacular. And for the first time—the interest had never been born in me before—and I just told Ale that going to visit these temples in China is something we would love to do,” Mr. Lans, an industrial developer, said.
Based in New York, Shen Yun is on a mission to present “China before communism” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.
It’s “very cool,” Mr. Lans said. “I think it’s an opportunity for people to understand and know Chinese culture and where the culture comes from. Especially right now, when we don’t have good concepts of countries internationally, and it’s an opportunity to get to know it in a very beautiful way.”
Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
Ms. Lans really enjoyed the “Water Sleeves” dance.
“The long sleeves ... that they throw them and they open up—spectacular,” he said. “Super beautiful.”
Shen Yun’s website explains that classical Chinese dance includes three main components—technical skill, form, and bearing, which is one of the many ways that classical Chinese dance is different from ballet.
“How spectacular ... They are athletes, they are artists, and truly, many congratulations. Thank you for bringing this here and making it known. I imagine it is a very big effort and sacrifice and it is greatly appreciated,” Mr. Lans said.
Shen Yun’s website says, “China was once known as ‘The Land of the Divine.’” Mr. Lans said he saw the spirituality of traditional China throughout Shen Yun’s performance.
Beyond the aesthetics and the beauty of the places, everything is trying to transmit that spiritual aspect, whether you are a believer or not, but in the end, it is a very beautiful observation to see that different culture and that contrast with our own,” he said.
Although Shen Yun is sharing the beauty of traditional Chinese culture with the world, Shen Yun is unable to perform in China.
It is very impressive that it is truly a struggle to be able to preserve these traditions and that spirituality. It’s great that they make the effort, being in New York and not necessarily in their country of origin, and that they keep up that fight to make this culture known,” Mr. Lans said.
