NEWARK, N.J.—One of the reasons John Brewster, a wealth manager, had wanted to see Shen Yun Performing Arts was the arts company’s mission to showcase “China before communism.”

“I like the idea of the history of China and that these people support that, so I support that 100 percent,” said Mr. Brewster, attending the performance with his partner, Susan Consalvo, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on May 3.

“I think it’s great. I think it’s really important on a global basis for that kind of information to be put out in the world,” he said, adding that the experience was “very worthwhile” and had his recommendation.

Ms. Consalvo, retired, agreed with the recommendation and said she would certainly see it again herself.

“I think it was well done, excellent. I love the choreography,” she said.

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, aiming to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the arts.

George Batsides, a heart surgeon, was another first-time audience member who expressed his support for the artists’ mission.

He said the regime’s suppression of culture and spirituality was “atrocious” and Shen Yun had “a huge mission.”

“From what I can gather, they’re trying to show the deep culture,” Mr. Batsides said.

“It’s been very interesting,” he said during intermission. “I was very intrigued by it. Excellent, excellent dancing. Phenomenal performance so far.”

“I can see the message they’re trying to get across. But the artistry that they’re using and doing it is excellent. It’s an enjoyable show,” he said.
