“[The erhu] was designed to mimic the human voice, … the closest sound of the voice that an instrument can achieve. I really felt I could hear that in the sound, in that the way they could bend the pitch and that kind of vibrato that they could achieve on that instrument. I hadn’t really quite heard that before. It was really interesting to … see the comparison between the voice and the instrument.”
