Shen Yun ‘Spectacular,’ Says Painter and Photographer

PORTLAND—Shen Yun Performing Arts made its way to Portland on April 2 for its first of three evening performances at the Keller Auditorium. In attendance was painter and photographer John Foster, who said that the show was unlike any he has seen before.

The costuming and the dance were really spectacular,” he said.

“A Shen Yun performance features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops—together creating one spectacular performance,” reads the Shen Yun website.

“Your backgrounds were very good,” Mr. Foster added. “I like how in some instances you have a projector figure coming apparently out of the screen and becoming the dancers on stage—that was very impressive.”

“With state-of-the-art graphics technology, Shen Yun’s digital-backdrop team creates vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one,” according to Shen Yun.

Mr. Foster said that he was particularly impressed by the immense talent of the dancers. “The spinning moves were extremely impressive visually,” he said.

A Shen Yun performance is so remarkably true-to-life, it allows its viewers to forget where they are and journey to another place and time.

“It had a very ethereal quality to it in many of the pieces—particularly the ones with women performing,” Mr. Foster explained. “Very, very impressive that way. They were kind of transporting, I guess, so you kind of forget your worldly cares during those pieces, which is really refreshing.”

As for the rigorous training required by the performers to exact such detailed and sustained energy for an entire show, Mr. Foster said that it definitely paid off.

“I was surprised by the amount of intensity maintained throughout—as far as the dancing ability,” he said.

Overall, he concluded that he was not disappointed in the least. “Very engaging show,” he said. “Very, very interesting to watch.”
