NEW YORK—Actress Joan Mintz said Shen Yun Performing Arts was ‘unbelievable’ and ‘fantastic’ and showed very best of China.

“I saw it all. The beauty, the culture, everything China has to offer, and I think it’s just wonderful,” she said when she saw the performance at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, Jan. 18.

Ms. Minz, who said she has acted in both English and Spanish films, soap operas, Comedy Central, and TV commercials, also practices tai chi with Chinese friends who gave her an appreciation for the ‘beauty’ and ‘delicacy’ of traditional Chinese culture.

Shen Yun is a performing arts company established in New York in 2006 by artists with the mission to revive traditional Chinese culture. Performances include classical Chinese dance, Chinese ethnic and folk dances, vocal solos, and all original music. Bilingual emcees give audiences insight into Chinese history and culture, and animated digital backdrops add striking visuals.

Ms. Mintz was impressed with the hundreds of colorful handmade costumes, complex dances, and the mini-dramas that retell ancient legends and stories from classic Chinese literature.

“The costumes, the choreography, the stories are just unbelievable—it’s awesome. It really is fabulous,” she said.

The coordination of the dancers and the backdrops were another highlight.

“The synchronization that they have, the dancing that they have, the backdrops that they have [are] just fantastic,” Ms. Mintz said.

Over the past nine years, Shen Yun has featured award-winning dancers and musicians and it has expanded to four companies that now tour to over 100 cities around the world, performing on some of the world’s most renowned stages.

And wherever they go, Shen Yun is met with accolades from audiences. Ms. Mintz said that the beauty of the performance “went straight through, right straight through” her heart.

“It just brings up your spirits and makes you feel happy,” she explained.
