SEATTLE, Wash—Shen Yun Performing Arts graced the stage of Seattle’s Marion Oliver McCaw Hall on April 4. Vladimir Ulyanov and his wife Tanya were in attendance for the performance.

“Oh, it was wonderful—fabulous performance!” said Mr. Ulyanov, an engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration. “It was great! I’ve never seen dancers like that. It’s amazing. Fantastic dancers.”

Through classical Chinese dance and the music, Shen Yun seeks to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

Mr. Ulyanov was moved by the dancers. “Well, the dancers … it’s a dance and then also the acrobatic,” he said. “It’s all this combination within the dance; that’s what is amazing to me.”

“Then costumes and plus the scenery thing, the visual effects,” added Mrs. Ulyanov.

According to Shen Yun’s website, “Every costume in a Shen Yun performance is presented with brilliant colors, displaying a splendid spectacle.”

The couple also appreciated Shen Yun’s use of technology to integrate the stage and dances.

“Very impressive,” Mr. Ulyanov said.

“They’re very impressive. And then they correspond with what’s going on on the stage, so it’s wonderful,” his wife added.

Being Russian, the Ulyanovs felt a special closeness to Shen Yun’s portrayal of modern-day China’s destruction at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party. “I’m pretty aware about the history of China, and the culture, and the dynasties, and the Soviet time or whatever, Communist time also,” Mrs. Ulyanov said. “So I can recognize the performance when there was a communist or when you can get punished when you do the meditation.”

Adding: “Because we’re Russians, we lived in the Soviet Union—in the communist country.”

Overall, the couple felt that to see Shen Yun oneself is the surest way understand the full experience.

“You need to go,” Mrs. Ulyanov said.

“You cannot describe it. It’s fantastic. Go and see it!” added her husband.
