KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The art of Shen Yun Performing Arts “is togetherness. They build a unity in their expression. They cooperate with one another to be like a living art. That is the way I see it,” said Dick Julian, after seeing the classical Chinese dance and music company at the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, on March 29.

“I found it very soul connecting, because this goes way back in time,” said the retired carpenter from Blue Springs, Mo. He attended with friend Norma Marshall, a retired art teacher, and now an artist who works in enamel.

“Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,” according to the company’s website.

“I just feel like everybody’s putting their heart and their soul into trying to express what was trying to be said. Very moving, I enjoyed it very much, beautiful!” he continued.

Shen Yun mission’s mission is to restore the divinely inspired culture nearly lost after decades of communist rule, Shen Yun’s website explains.

Ms. Marshall felt the program was “extremely exciting.” She “loved the action and the movements, and nobody made a mistake. It was all perfect, and the music was wonderful. It was just great! Love to see again sometime.”

She described a particular dance in which the performers held ribbons as they danced. She said it looked like three-dimensional choreography, so she agreed with Mr. Julian that Shen Yun seemed like living art.

“It was just very impressive what they were doing,” she said.

“I would recommend it,” Mr. Julian said. “It’s beautiful and it’s expressive.”

“Go see it,” Ms. Marshall said.

“It’s seems to get to my soul, to my existence,” he said.

“I agree. It was spiritual, and so visually enchanting,” Ms. Marshall said.
