NEW YORK—Valery Craane, managing director at Merril Lynch’s wealth management unit and among Barron’s Top 100 Women Financial Advisors, loved seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts.
The April 21 performance at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater was the second time she saw Shen Yun.
“The artistry, the fantastic staging, and the little stories, they are absolutely entertaining, and for me they open a new world,” she said.
New York-based Shen Yun formed in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture with dance, music and a digitally animated backdrop.
This year’s performance features 22 different pieces as well as traditional songs. “In less than ten minutes each, Shen Yun dances recount ancient myths, bygone heroes, or celestial paradises,” according to the Shen Yun website.
Shen Yun gave Ms. Craane a new perspective on China, and she thanked Shen Yun for bringing the cultural revival to New York, “and opening a window to a new world.”
She would also recommend the performance to others. “Hopefully what we can do here is spread the news and tell everybody about our enthusiasm.”
‘Perfect combination’
Jose Sanchez-Padilla a retired executive search consultant and his wife Magdalena share this enthusiasm. In fact, they wanted to see Shen Yun so much that they flew all the way from Mexico City to New York to see it.
“Perfect combination of the culture and the dancers are fantastic,” said Mr. Sanchez-Padilla. “The way that they perform so together so coordinated.”
For Mrs. Sanchez-Padilla, the spiritual aspect of the performance was most striking.
“It’s Buddha that is coming down [to earth] and everything is again the way it should be, the way it was supposed to be. Human beings were supposed to be created for that,” she said referring to the last piece of the performance, Divine Mercy.
“Deep down in our roots, our human roots, we all tend to that, which I thought was marvelous.”
