ORLANDO, Fla.—Local reporter and columnist Richard Corbeil and his wife, Marilyn, enjoyed the Shen Yun performance at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre on Jan. 25.

“Fantastic! It was great,” said Mr. Corbeil, who studied Chinese history at Harvard. Mr. Corbeil writes for the Apopka Chief, where he has written “Corbeil’s Corner” for more than 16 years.

Shen Yun performs large-scale dances that require the dancers to move in sync. Mr. Corbeil said the dancer’s coordination was impressive: “It was amazing how coordinated they were.”

To set the stage for the dancers, Shen Yun incorporates a backdrop that is projected and animated. It transports you to vivid scenes—the plains of Mongolia, a Buddhist temple, the imperial court, heavenly settings, and more.

Mrs. Corbeil said the animation was wonderful. “I don’t know how they did that,” she said.

“That was miraculous,” Mr. Corbeil added.

Both said they very much enjoyed the music of Shen Yun, which brings together a Western orchestra and traditional Chinese instruments. The combination creates a unique effect.

Shen Yun’s website says the group’s mission is to revive the heritage of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization. Shen Yun calls Chinese culture a divine culture.

Mrs. Corbeil said it was beautiful how Shen Yun presented “the importance of eventually going back to heaven.”

Mr. Corbeil felt that Shen Yen, with its traditional values, would make a difference in the world, promoting “a feeling of togetherness,” of “having more in common with each other.”
