MINNEAPOLIS—At the Orpheum Theatre, Shen Yun Performing Arts gave theatergoers another very enjoyable evening in its third of four performances, on Feb. 15, in the City of Lakes.

Fred Huff said the performance was “Fantastic. I think the settings, the background, the way they use them, and they change and they are terrific and of course, the performers, they’re terrific.”

He was speaking of the digitally animated backdrops that interact with Shen Yun dancers. Designed to provide vivid context to each story-dance, the high-tech backdrops interact seamlessly with the dancers on stage. Shen Yun aspires to revitalize traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance.

Fred Huff is a retired director of performance improvement for the University of Texas. He and his wife Joanne moved up to Minneapolis after he retired.

Ms. Huff said Shen Yun was “Very enjoyable. It was excellent.”

“I like the artistic part of the dancing,” Mr. Huff explained. “Especially at the beginning when they opened the curtain.”

Mr. Huff found it unbelievable how precise the dancers’ movements were. “It’s just that no one was out of their precision. They were all just very uniform. It was a lot to pull everything together. Very impressed,” he said.

Through the universal languages of music and dance, the New York-based Shen Yun brings 5,000 years of Chinese civilization to life.

“The whole story behind everything was really enlightening to see that aspect. You know, you really understand it better,” Ms. Huff said.

In addition to the dances, Shen Yun travels with a unique orchestra comprised of both Western and Chinese instruments, as well as award-winning vocalists.

“I like the lyrics behind the singing, so you could fully understand, and I guess that really made it more meaningful to me,” Ms. Huff stated. “Otherwise, I would have just heard a beautiful voice.”

“It’s all very excellent. Their talent is unreal,” Mr. Huff said.

Before she left, Ms Huff said she'd tell her friends: “If they have a chance, come to see it ... Everybody, all of our friends will definitely enjoy it.”
