EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Mr. and Mrs. Sherretz truly enjoyed the performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 28, at the Aiken Theatre at The Centre.

John Sherretz characterized his experienced as a “kind of euphoric-type feeling, really.”

Mr. Sherretz’s experience is not surprising. According to the New York-based Shen Yun’s website: “Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired.”

That tremendous energy was not lost upon Mr. Sherretz, who once held posts as county road specialist, County Commissioner, and president of two companies, before retirement. He said that Shen Yun’s costumes were fantastic.

Hundreds of Shen Yun’s colorful costumes complement its scenic backdrops.

Mr. Sherretz’s wife, Marie, loved the “combination of the choreography with the background,” referring to the digitally interactive backdrops that aid in characters on the screen suddenly coming alive when performers take over their roles.

The cultural aspect was interesting to the couple as well.

Mr. Sherretz knew China as one of the oldest civilizations in the world, but he was surprised to learn that Shen Yun cannot perform there. The traditional culture of the Chinese people has been systematically destroyed by the Chinese Communist Party, the website explains.

For Mrs. Sherretz, the evening left her with a different thought.

She shared that their daughter died less than a year ago, so she was happy to experience a deeper message from Shen Yun: “It kind of gave you [the sense] that there is something higher—a higher place—and it doesn’t end here. I was really amazed.”

After all, it was her daughter’s husband who bought the couple their Shen Yun tickets.
