CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—After Steve Walker saw Shen Yun at Tivoli Theatre on Jan. 14, he said, “On a scale of one to ten it was an eleven.”

Standing in the ornate lobby of the Tivoli, a restored movie palace, Mr. Walker, an investor, and Joyce Davis, a manager, were all smiles. “I just play the stock market,” said Mr. Walker. 

For Mr. Walker, the outstanding aspect of Shen Yun’s classical Chinese dance was “the athleticism. I mean, they made it look so simple but it’s not. The choreography, the way they synchronize the video with the three dimensional, I have never seen anything like it.” According to the program, “Months of effort, and of course a little inspiration, are now before you.”

Shen Yun integrates a projected digital backdrop with the dancers and the orchestra, with impeccable timing.

Ms. Davis wanted to see Shen Yun because her niece is with the Tennessee Dance Company, she said. The dance in Shen Yun exceeded her expectations. “Oh, it was perfect,” she said. “I will come back.”

According to the Shen Yun website, “Classical Chinese dance is a culture left to us by the ancients who came before us; its beauty should be riches shared by all of humanity; its purity should not be contaminated. Shen Yun Performing Arts’ dance style is built upon classical Chinese dance as a foundation, while also maintaining a number of ethnic and folk dances. This combination embodies Chinese people’s aestheticism and ethnic character.”

Ms. Davis said she felt grateful for the effort the artists put into the performance. “Thank you for all your hard work.”

“We do appreciate what it took to bring this about,” added Mr. Walker.
