NEW YORK—Elizabeth Ganss, director of corporate finance at the Hertz Corporation found Shen Yun Performing Arts “enchanting” when she saw the New York-based company perform at the the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on April 27.

“You can’t stop smiling,” she said, “You smile through the whole show.”

Ms. Ganss commented on the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, as depicted by Shen Yun and the richness of the performance.

“The dance is so intricate and amazing and the costumes ...” she said.

Shen Yun Performing Arts is New York-based and dedicated to reviving China’s 5,000-year history, which was all but wiped out by the Cultural Revolution.

“Humanity’s treasure was nearly lost, but through breathtaking music and dance, Shen Yun is bringing back this glorious culture,” the website says.

For Ms. Ganss Shen Yun was also a salient reminder of contemporary China.

“It reinforces what I think everybody knows here, that China isn’t just the great economy everybody talks about,” she said, adding that there is also in China, “the persecution of religion and people’s freedom.”

She was referring particularly to the contemporary scene in the Shen Yun performance which depicts Falun Gong practitioners being brutally beaten for holding a banner reading Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance, the principles of the practice.

Ms. Ganss said she was heartened to see that Chinese people had such a beautiful culture and that there was “good in their heart.”

“That is not an image that we think about with [respect to] the Chinese people,” she said, admitting that she had not felt an affinity with Chinese people before seeing Shen Yun. “Now you feel a kinship for the people,” she said

Shen Yun is something everyone should see, she said, adding that she would make a point of telling her friends and colleagues. “Come and see it. Absolutely come see it, it is once in a lifetime experience,” she said.
