FORT WORTH, Texas—“It’s just a relaxing, dreamy thing,” said Ms. Barbara Gieser, a retired executive vice president, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Jan. 6.
Ms. Gieser, who dances tap, came to Shen Yun with an immense interest in the performing arts, and she found herself blown away by the skill and artistry she saw.
Established in 2006, the New York-based Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the performing arts.
“I love the precision. It’s beautiful, and the precision is unbelievable,” Ms. Gieser said, adding that “it’s a group precision.”
Shen Yun puts on all-new productions each year, incorporating classical Chinese dance—as well as ethnic and folk dances—from many of China’s 55 minority ethnic groups.
Classically trained dancers grace the stage alongside solo vocalists, who sing original compositions in the bel canto style, while Shen Yun’s orchestra blends East and West to create a completely new sounds.
Ms. Gieser was especially impressed with soprano Tianling Song’s voice and with the orchestra’s beautiful and relaxing instrumentation, she said.
The production embodied a soothing effect, but at the same time, Ms. Gieser added, it opened up the imagination.
Aiding the imagination was Shen Yun’s use of a state-of-the-art digital backdrop that accompanied the performance. The animated backdrop was unlike any other she had ever seen.
“It’s amazing how they drop off in the back and then pick up the video. It looks like they’re just falling off the stage! That’s pretty neat,” Ms. Gieser said.
Shen Yun’s digital backdrop transports the audience on a 5,000-year journey. It displays scenes from various periods and places, while allowing the performers to appear on stage one moment and on screen the next.
“They’re all together,” Ms. Gieser said. “The dancers are wonderful.”
