PARIS—Psychologist and psychiatrist Floriana Pacelli enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time at the Palais des Congrès in Paris on May 10.

“I think the show is magnificent! I didn’t know that classical Chinese dance was as much about acrobatics as it was about dancing. There’s such an elegance in the costumes,” Pacelli said.

The New York-based dance and music company uses this ancient art form, classical Chinese dance, to bring 5,000 years of ancient Chinese civilization to life.

“Then, it’s very interesting to go through the history of China ... It makes you dream. That’s it! There’s the quality of the dance, the quality of the costumes and also the grace that Chinese dance embodies ... It’s really very beautiful,” Pacelli said.

“I felt a lot of harmony in me and the desire to stay and watch. There is something very spiritual, in fact, that‘s true,” Pacelli said.

As the emcees explain, Shen Yun translates into something like “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” as traditional Chinese culture is said to be divinely inspired. This link to the past was something Pacelli found beautiful.

“The values displayed which I have noticed are traditional values, discipline, precision, appreciation of the past and at the same time the will to move towards the future ... while respecting the traditions,” Pacelli said.

“This show can also bring a return to the origins, to the love of tradition and at the same time ... beauty, spirituality, the universal healthy principles. This may only bring positive messages,” she said.

Pacelli explained that there were scenes of conflict as well, epic fights in famous legends and stories, as well as modern-day stories set in China, one of which touches on the ongoing persecution of faith under the communist regime. But it was all done with a tone of hope.

“The number about the persecution is very strong, I hope it will also bring a positive message and stop all of this,” Pacelli said.
