THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.—“I love it,” said actress Liberty Dawn after attending Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Fred Kavli Theatre on March 18. “The performance is wonderful.”

Shen Yun was established in 2006 in New York with the goal of reviving the genuine, divinely inspired culture of China through the universal language of music and dance, according to the non-profit company’s website.

A Shen Yun Performance features classical Chinese dance, accompanied by a full orchestra with a unique combination of Eastern and Western instruments, and includes folk dances, story-based dances, vocal and instrumental soloists, intricate costumes, and a vibrant digital backdrop that interacts with the artists on stage.

“The costumes are beautiful,” said Ms. Dawn. “The music is beautiful. I really love learning a little bit about the history of Chinese theater and what they’re presenting through the story-telling, through their dance and through their bodies and through the music.”

Ms. Dawn said the dancers’ execution was beautiful and evocative. She said she could see the meaning and the story behind each dance simply by watching the dancers and listening to the music.

“You can get exactly what the storyline is if you’re looking at the dancers, their facial expressions, and their eyes and their body language, it’s all in what they’re doing,” she said. “It’s the melodies in the music: it goes from drama to something comedic. … It’s in the dancers. It’s in the music. It’s beautiful.”

Ms. Dawn could also feel the dancers’ powerful energy and their own personal story coming through.

“The energy of the dancers, their life, that you can tell there is a story going on within each dancer, that they’re conveying the story to you through their bodies,” she said.

Most of all, Ms. Dawn appreciated and enjoyed watching how every part of Shen Yun’s performance came together and worked with each other harmoniously.

“I’m watching the lighting,” she said. “I’m watching the interaction with the screen and background and the dancers and their movement, the liveliness of the music, the melodies, the colors. The way that the dancers move and how the costumes move with the dancers. It’s all enhancing the experience that we’re having watching the show. It’s beautiful.”

Ms. Dawn studied acting for seven years at the world-renowned Stella Adler Academy, with alumni including Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro and Salma Hayek. Ms. Dawn is now working as a producer, director, playwright, actress, and guest speaker at Gritty Christian Films, LLC.
