NEW YORK—Saying Roberto Sanchez had a good time at Shen Yun Performing Arts on Saturday night would be a severe understatement.

“It’s the most spectacular and prettiest, most fantastic thing I have seen in my life,” he said after seeing New York-based Shen Yun at Lincoln Center. “I love it very much.”

The painter found many aspects of the performance to pay close attention to, including the movements, the choreography, and the color.

The heart of the performance is classical Chinese dance, a dance system that includes form, technical skill, and bearing. The technical skill includes highly difficult jumping and tumbling techniques, and the bearing means “a combination of something resembling cultural DNA or an ethnic flavor in Chinese people’s bones, together with the heritage of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization,” explains Shen Yun’s website.

A unique orchestra that has both classical Chinese and Western instruments accompanies the dancers, along with handmade costumes and state-of-the-art digital backdrops.

“The combination of the movements and the sound and the music and instruments is fantastic,” said Mr. Sanchez. “It’s fantastic: the movements, the artists, the people.”

The best part for Mr. Sanchez was finding inspiration for his painting in the color, definition, lines, and costumes.

“It is a very complete performance,” he said. “It is fantastic.”
