NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—For a company of any form to be successful, there has to be a good amount of discipline and teamwork. Since 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts has been working endlessly to perfect its art and present true beauty to its audience.
“I think it’s wonderful that somebody cares enough to put something like this together and show it to the world. I think it’s very worthwhile, it is beautifully done. The synchronization, the precision, the abilities of the dancers, the whole thing is an amazing production of beauty, and it is well, well worth seeing. It’s something very different and it’s truly beautiful,” said Nancy Porter, who is one of the major donors to the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts.
New York-based Shen Yun’s dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance. Flexibility and a strong core are essentials to a dancer’s body.

“The athleticism, the raising the foot over the head are moments for those of us who could not even dream of ever doing anything like that. I’ve been a professional dancer, so that truly is amazing being able to do that. I understand what it takes to do that and they do it so effortlessly and make it so beautiful and with anything that is done with such perfection, it looked so easy. And it is truly a work of beauty,” said Ms. Porter.

Shen Yun is dedicated to presenting a true Chinese culture—one before communism, to audiences around the world.

“I appreciate their support of their viewpoint, and I think it’s very worthwhile and I think there are some meditative lessons there for all of us,” said Ms. Porter.

One of the dances told the story of Falun Gong practitioners who are being persecuted for their beliefs. Falun Gong teaches people to live by the principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance.

“Truth, tolerance, compassion. These are all very worthwhile values we could all use more of in today’s messed up world,” expressed Ms. Porter.

She also commended Shen Yun for sharing its art with the world.

“Hooray for you and your dedication and your incredible achievement in being able to do this and your willingness to share this with the world,” she said.

During the performance, Ms. Porter had a great view of the orchestra pit.
“I would like to add a word about the musicians in the pit. I’m fortunate to be able to sit in the front row, and in observing the pit, I have never seen such a group of well-disciplined musicians, and I appreciate the fact that not only were the men in their appropriate white shirts and bow ties, but even the women had their uniform.”
“Usually you just require them all to wear black, but their discipline and their musicality was truly to be admired and respected as a former professional musician myself, I used to play string bass, and I played in many orchestras and pits, and I really appreciated the excellence of your pit orchestra,” said Ms. Porter.
