DETROIT—Business owner Danny Gutierrez had seats near the stage at the Detroit Opera House on Friday night and found that the clear view added to his enjoyment of the classical Chinese dance and music production of Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“It’s very beautiful, obviously very professional as well,” said Mr. Gutierrez, who is the fourth generation to own Mexican Food Specialties.

The company’s founder is referred to as a “Tortillero” in the industry, a title held only by masters of the art of tortilla manufacturing.

New York-based Shen Yun endeavors to bring back China’s traditional culture through excellence in dance and music that reflects the true principles and values of the country’s ancient heritage. As such, it presents 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture to the world, as explained on the company’s website.

“I would say the dancing is very beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like it before,” said Mr. Gutierrez, who attended the performance with his wife, Mandy, of Vietnamese and Chinese origin.

Classical Chinese dance is one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world, and its movements are rich in their ability to express a variety of feelings.

Audience members often comment on the passion displayed by Shen Yun’s dancers, who skillfully evoke the emotions of each piece they perform, with their facial expressions coordinated with their physical movements.

Sitting near the front of the theater, “it’s actually pretty intense to see everything so up close, and seeing everybody. You can actually see everybody and everything,” said Mr. Gutierrez.

“They do a great job with the music,” he added, praising the live orchestra.

Shen Yun’s orchestra is composed of both traditional Chinese instruments, which carry the melodies, and Western instruments, which provide the lush foundation to the music.

“I would say the show is very beautiful,” Mr. Gutierrez said.
