International Marketing VP: Shen Yun Inspires Awe

January 3, 2014

DALLAS—Kim Schuy, global vice president of marketing for Essilor, an international provider of eyeglass lenses, experienced the beauty of traditional Chinese culture while watching Shen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 2.

“The costumes are phenomenal,” Ms. Schuy said at Shen Yun’s opening night in Dallas at the Winspear Opera House. “The group is perfect.”

Attending with her mother, Ms. Schuy said she didn’t know what to expect from the performance. But when the curtains rose on the New York-based Shen Yun’s revival of divinely inspired culture, however, Ms. Schuy was in awe.

“There’s a lot of energy, and the colors are magnificent,” she said. “There’s a lot of awe, and it’s impressive.”

Ms. Schuy was also impressed by the variety of dances she saw in the performance. Shen Yun performs traditional dance including folk and ethnic dances—like the Mongolian chopsticks dance—and classical Chinese dance.

Classical Chinese dance is a vast and independent system with hundreds of unique postures and movements, and highly difficult tumbling, jumping, and flipping techniques. Many sports, like acrobatics and gymnastics, utilize similar techniques, and in fact, such techniques originate from classical Chinese dance.

“It’s really interesting,” Ms. Schuy said. “There’s a lot I don’t really know about China … So I guess I’m a little bit more curious.”

The emcees gave an introduction to each dance, Ms. Schuy said, and she felt herself wanting more information about the history, the specific dynasties, and the significance of the variety of costumes she saw. Ms. Schuy also paid special notice to the differences in the female and male dancers, from the way they carried themselves to the variations in their costumes.

In one piece, the male dancers played drums on a Tang Dynasty battlefield, and in another, the female dancers wore costumes presenting the Han Dynasty “water sleeves.”

“I think the females are really elegant and beautiful,” Ms. Schuy said.
