Humanitarian Cristal Montanez: Shen Yun Tells the Truth of China

HOUSTON—“This performance is beautiful,” said Ms. Cristal Montanez, humanitarian, political activist, and executive director of the Hashoo Foundation, about Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston, Dec. 31.

“Telling the story of the country with such many thousands of years of arts and civilization through the art, and bringing people through today after so many millennia, is extraordinary,” Ms. Montanez said. “I absolutely love it.”

New York-based Shen Yun was established in 2006 by artist from around the globe with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Under the current regime, the divinely inspired culture was once almost-lost.

Ms. Montanez said Shen Yun was absolutely an inspiration to her. Her own home country is subject to communist rule and she understands the effect it has had on the culture.

“It’s absolutely extraordinary to tell the world the truth about communist China and create awareness of what’s happened through the arts,” Ms. Montanez said. “It’s absolutely incredible.”

Ms. Montanez, formerly Miss Venezuela of 1977, now works to alleviate poverty and empower women in northern Pakistan through her non-profit organization.

“I feel very blessed and lucky to be here,” Ms. Montanez said.
