FOLSOM, Calif.—Music is a window to the soul, and dance and music complement each other in a way that no other two art forms can.

With Shen Yun Performing Arts, both its dance and music are unique.

I appreciate the discipline and the organic process of Western and Eastern fusion.

“That was very well done. I really appreciated it. I appreciate the discipline and the organic process of Western and Eastern fusion,” said Marcus Feldman, a composer, after seeing a performance at Harris Center in Folsom, California, on Jan. 25.

Shen Yun Performing Arts is based in New York and has eight companies touring around the world, each company has its own orchestra. The classical Western orchestra is the first to permanently combine traditional Chinese instruments such as the pipa, erhu, and Chinese percussion.

Mr. Feldman complimented the orchestra on performing such music to promote “the feeling behind it combined with the performers and the discipline they put into it, and the delicacy.”

“I really enjoyed the compositions. I think that it was really well done,” said Mr. Feldman.

He added that music to him is healing and a form of communication.

“The way I view music and composition—it’s all vibration. And music is a healing force. And as a global expression, everyone benefits from any form of music,” he said.

Regarding the performance as a whole, Mr. Feldman said, “I loved it. I had tears in my eyes the whole time. It’s so beautiful.”

Shen Yun’s dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance, a dance form with thousands of years of history. Mr. Feldman shared that he could see the passion in the artists.

“The experience overall was just very deep and gentle, but also very fierce at the same time. There’s a lot of fire through the effort of the performance,” he said.

In attendance with Mr. Feldman was Linda Byrd, an astrologer. She added, “You can see the dedication in each of the performers. They were so wonderful. They were so animated and graceful and talented in every way.”

Shen Yun is using this dance form and its live orchestra to revive China’s 5,000 years of civilization—a China before communism.

“It’s very important that this expression exists because most people in America don’t really understand pre- and post-communist China. So this is a very valuable contribution to that knowledge and insight,” said Mr. Feldman.

According to its website, Shen Yun draws inspiration from ancient Chinese tales and legends to create dances that speak volumes of the spirit of each character that is being portrayed.

It opened up an appreciation for the greater understanding of ancient traditions in China,” said Mr. Feldman.
