What makes a melody memorable? There are as many answers as there are memorable melodies.
All the tunes that find homes in our recollection have their own distinct profiles. If they have anything in common, it’s the ability to surprise and, at the same time, seem inevitable. Think of the “Ode to Joy.” It all seems pleasant, if expected, until a certain surprising turn right before the return to the first part of the melody. How did it get there?
