TAINAN, Taiwan — Divine Performing Arts (DPA) staged its first show in Tainan, on the evening of Feb. 20, amid thunderous applause from the captivated audience who kept shouting “Encore!” It is the third time that Lee Derlin, chairman of the College of Performing and Visual Arts, National University of Tainan, watched the DPA show. As soon as he stepped out of the theater at the end of the show, he said, “Very good! Very good!” and expressed his willingness to see the DPA performance next year, if possible.

“The integration of set designs and music into the performance impresses the audience with their thorough artistic work,” he said admiringly.

As a music professional, Mr. Lee, was deeply impressed with the harmonious combination of Chinese traditional music and Western music to express ups and downs of the plots.

His favorites were the singing of Guan Guimin and Yuan Qu. As director of the Chorus of National University of Tainan, who has also given choral performances, he appreciated the high caliber of these two tenors.

Mr. Lee was also deeply impressed with “Welcoming Spring,” a fan dance with a surprise ending. “In the first half of the show the ‘Dance of the Yi’ uses skirts of various colors to form very beautiful designs of great esthetic value. There are figures ascending to the backdrops and descending from the backdrops, in perfect harmony with the performance. Set designs are also well-integrated into the performance.”

Mr. Lee also mentioned that he was very touched by the program “Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution.” “It is danced very smoothly and naturally. The story also gives a moral lesson to audience members. I am very touched by the program.

“I have some Falun Gong acquaintances. Though I don’t have much understanding of the profundity of Falun Gong and Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance, Falun Gong practitioners make a very, very good impression on me. They are very positive, gentle, and kind,” he said.

Mr. Lee highly recommends DPA to his graduate students, sharing with them his experiences of DPA shows in the past two years. He said, “ The College of Performing and Visual Arts, National University Tainan was founded two years ago, and its students have a lot to learn from DPA’s artistic achievements in integrating music, art, dancing, multi-media technology, and costumes.”

Mrs. Lee watched the DPA performance for the first time. She said that she was deeply impressed with the artistic presentation of the dancing, colorful costumes, stage properties, and backdrops. Her favorite program was “Dragon Springs Drummers,” which is characterized by a quick, and well-arranged rhythm. If there is an opportunity, she will recommend DPA to her friends and relatives.
