We’d like to think that winter is gone, along with the sub-zero temperatures and dark, dreary days that we left behind with daylight savings time.

Spring has finally arrived! More sunlight and budding blooms can uplift everyone’s spirit. Flowers not only bring life to the flat beige of the pending season but smiles to those who encounter the spectacle that comes with the colours of spring.

Flowers have the power to affect moods and emotional well being as well as add to decor and design of both the interior and exterior of any home, bringing life to any room and landscape. We learned from Mark Cullen, flower extraordinaire and guest speaker at the spring Canada Blooms Garden Show that flowers and spring brighten moods and that giving flowers does as much good for the sender, as the receiver.

“The positive effects of flowers extend further than a simple smile, recent studies show that receiving flowers actually lifts mood and creates an internal feeling of immediate happiness.” he said.

A team of researchers explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction in a 10-month study of participants’ behavioural and emotional responses to receiving flowers.

The results show that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods. As they say, “sometimes you have to stop and take time to smell the roses”—and now scientific research confirms it!

Here are some of the effects of flowers:

1. Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.

2. Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.

3. Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends.
