HOUSTON—Juan Valdez, director of engineering for the city of Houston, and his daughter saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center on Feb. 15.

Mr. Valdez was so impressed with Shen Yun that he couldn’t put a rating on it.

“No rating. You can’t put a number. It takes you out of the scale of rating. If you say a ten, you cannot compare it—it’s more than that. You cannot describe it, you have to experience it.”

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.
“Phenomenal. Just wonderful and fantastic. I am out of words. It wasn’t just a show. It’s an experience. It’s a journey through the people of China, their culture. It was divine,” Mr. Valdez said.

Audience members have felt an array of emotions when experiencing Shen Yun.

“To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what I was expecting. So when they showed the first scene, I was just speechless; a lot of emotions came to me at the same time, like happiness. Internally, it was so overwhelming. … You felt every emotion through the performance,” Mr. Valdez said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
“It was actually kind of cool with the flips and all that stuff,” said fifth grader, Ms. Valdez.

Shen Yun opens with a heavenly scene. Mr. Valdez described it as “Magical. It was like seeing the clouds when they opened the curtain.”

When the performance ended, he wanted to see more about Chinese culture.

“The last piece actually made me want more. … I want to learn more about China,” he said.
On the surface, Shen Yun is a performance of dance and music, but Mr. Valdez believes that there is more to it.

“Transcendent. It had more than [what you see] at face value. It was more than that,” he said.

Throughout the performance, those who preserve good values may run into trouble, but the divine is willing to help those who deserve it.

“We’re going through tribulations nowadays. So this was a little bit of a parallel to everyday life for us.
