WASHINGTON—Ms. Li, who traveled from China to the United States for tourism and research in photographic arts, attended the sixth performance of Shen Yun World Company at the Kennedy Center Opera House on the afternoon of Jan. 11.
“Through the union of body, mind, and soul, the artists convey different stories on stage. That is what touched me most,” she said.
“This theme is reflected in the choreography of every dance and further highlighted through the stage design and lighting,” she said. “The overall effect is very strong.”
She further explained that Chinese culture has a deep-rooted love for natural beauty and a belief in the goodness of the human heart. During difficult times, people may look to the divine for strength, and they never stop seeking what is kind, beautiful, and pure. “Shen Yun presents this spiritual outlook of the Chinese people in a complete way,” she said.
Ms. Li said that the beauty shown in Shen Yun is “pure and unassuming,” rather than flamboyant technique or abstract expression. “It is precisely this simplicity, this unadorned beauty, that most deeply resonates with the heart,” she remarked.
She also noted that art can take many forms, whether through color, body language, or choreography.
“Shen Yun uses physical movement to express inner emotion and spiritual meaning, allowing audiences from different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds to understand and feel it,” she said.
Ms. Li was particularly touched by the performers’ complete immersion in the performance, with body, mind, and spirit fully unified.
“These artists are very young,” she said, “but when I saw them fully engaged—through their deep understanding of the music and dance, expressing an inner pursuit of beautiful things, and completely integrating their emotions into the storyline—I was truly moved.”
Ms. Li believes that Shen Yun’s message is a call for humanity to cherish universal values.
