NEWARK, N.J.—Pastors Marcal and Krystal Dacunha watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on May 4.

“It was awesome, it was great,” said Mr. Dacunha. “Very professional, very well-done.”

“I think the costumes were gorgeous,” Mrs. Dacunha added. “I think the dancers were very graceful [and that] they had a lot of control.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 and is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Now with eight equally sized companies touring the world simultaneously, Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture and to give its audiences a glimpse of pre-communist China.

Mrs. Dacunha said that she found Shen Yun’s entire production to be very well-cultured and that information about Chinese culture she did not know about before was presented in a beautiful way.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Dacunha both felt that Shen Yun presented the virtues of traditional Chinese culture.
“I like the fact that they honor tradition, and they wanted you to go back to tradition,” said Mrs. Dacunha. “Usually, anything traditional is seen negatively, but they were honoring tradition, honoring the things of the past, and showing how beautiful the things of the past were.”

“There was a lot of moral or morality that they were pointing towards,” she added. “It was still beautiful to see them honoring their ancestors or their predecessors.”

According to Shen Yun’s website, the ancient Chinese people believed their culture was divinely inspired and came from the Heavens. Shen Yun’s opening piece reflects this belief and depicts divine beings following the Creator down to Earth to establish civilization.

Mr. and Mrs. Dacunha said that although they had different beliefs, they connected with and appreciated what Shen Yun presented.

“In our world, there is an absence of the godly or the spiritual things, and so even from someone who doesn’t technically believe the same as what the show is portraying, I still appreciate the attention that was paid towards the spiritual and theological aspects,” said Mrs. Dacunha.

Mr. Dacunha described Shen Yun’s performance as flawless.

Mrs. Dacunha said that she enjoyed Shen Yun’s patented animated backdrop, which allows performers to move between the stage and the backdrop.

“It was very, very well choreographed, very beautiful,” said Mrs. Dacunha.
